تا حالا شده به شیرینی‌فروشی یا نانوایی بروید، ولی ندانید چطور به فروشنده بفهمانید که چه نوع نان یا شیرینی‌ای می‌خواهید یا به چه صورت می‌خواهید نان شما بریده بشود؟ دراین درس من سعی کرده‌ام لغات و اصطلاحاتی را که در این شرایط استفاده می‌شود، بهتان یاد بدهم.
به همهٔ چیزهایی که در نانوایی فروخته می‌شود baked goods گفته می‌شود، مثل bread ،cakes muffins و غیره…
وقتی به نانوایی می‌روید ممکن است بخواهید که نان را به‌صورت درسته بگیرید یا آن را برایتان ببرند.
Slice: to thinly cut
Can you slice this, please?
Could I get this sliced, please?
یعنی می‌شود لطفاً این نان را برایم ببرید؟
به نانی که هنوز بریده نشده می‌گوییم a loaf of bread.
انواع نان‌هایی که بیشتر در زندگی روزمره استفاده می‌شوند:
White bread, wheat bread, whole grain bread, and rye bread.
به نان‌هایی که تیره‌ترند می‌گوییم rye bread.
الان به این دیالوگ دقت کنید:
Clerk: Hi, can I help you?
Leticia: Hi. I’m trying to make up my mind about which kind of dessert to get. Everything in the case looks delicious.
to make up my mind به‌معنی تصمیم گرفتن است، یعنی می‌خواهد تصمیم بگیرد که کدام دسر را بخرد.
the case اینجا به معنی ویترین شیرینی‌فروشی است.
Clerk: Thanks. As you can see, we have a lot of different types of cookies, brownies, cakes, and muffins over here.
Leticia: Ooh, that cake looks wonderful. How many people does it serve?
یعنی این برای چند نفر کافی‌ست؟
Clerk: This one? It has three layers, and it serves between eight and 10 people, depending on how you slice it.
یعنی این سه طبقه است و برای ۸ تا ۱۰ نفر کافی است.
If you like chocolate, you may like this one over here with the frosting and sprinkles.
به خامه و تزئینات روی کیک می‌گویند frosting and sprinkles.
Leticia: Oh, that looks good, too. Hmm. It’s so hard to decide. Why don’t I take the layer cake, and I’d like a dozen of these cookies, too.
a dozen به‌معنی ۱۲ تا است.
Clerk: Our cookies, muffins, and scones always come in baker’s dozens. Can I get you anything else?
Leticia: I think I’d like a bag of those biscotti, too.
Clerk: Sure, no problem. Would you like the cookies and biscotti in the same box as the cake?
Leticia: No. Please put them in separate boxes, if you don’t mind.
یعنی اگر برای شما هم اشکالی ندارد (if you don’t mind)، بگذاریمشان توی جعبه‌های مجزا.
Clerk: Not at all. Here you are.
Leticia: Thanks. We’ll be having an overload of sugar for the next few days!
حالا که با برخی ازجملات و لغات کاربردی در نانوایی و شیرینی‌فروشی آشنا شدید، چند اصطلاح یاد می‌دهم که به‌نظر مربوط به نانوایی می‌آیند، ولی در واقع معنی متفاوتی دارند:
to have a bun in the oven – to be pregnant
اشاره به خانم باردار
eg: Did yoy know that Jane has a bun in the oven?
one sharp cookie – someone who is not easily fooled or deceived
آدم تيز و باهوش
eg: My dad is a real sharp cookie! I can never deceive him!
one tough cookie – someone who is self-confident and ambitious and will do what is necessary to achieve what they want
آدم سرسخت و با پشتکار
eg: Sarah is one though cookie… she tries her best to go to university.
icing on the cake – an extra benefit that makes a good situation even better
از اين بهتر نمی‌شود
eg: If you let me stay here, I will be very thankful and if you help me, too this is just icing on the cake.
